The Evil we face

The Times Online provides a horrific account of the brutal murder of one of Iraq's top journalists. Half Sunni and half Shi’ite, Atwar Bahjat's dedication to impartial reporting made her enemies on both sides of Iraq’s sectarian divide: she could never satisfy one without infuriating the other. We may never know who is responsible for her horrific murder but it is evident that these are the acts of pure evil. Both the Sunni and the Shia have in the past committed similar horrific acts, Nick Berg, and the 4 American contractors in Najaf as examples of each. Both of these groups commit these acts of evil in the name of what they believe to God. Only by confronting this evil can we hope to defeat it, ignoring it will not make it go away. Only when the people of Iraq have the freedom to choose their own religion on an individual basis will we be able to marginalize the hatred of the Islamic Fanatics there.
